15日のダイヤ改正では、青い森鉄道の筒井駅(青森高校前)=青森市=が開業した。同社の新駅開業は02年の設立以来初めて。この日は新型車両703系もデビューし、筒井駅にお目見えした。この日朝の開業式典で小林巧一社長は「新しい駅、新しい車両、新しいダイヤが一斉にスタートする」とあいさつ。午前9時6分、八戸発青森行きの703系が筒井駅の下り線ホームに滑りこむと、関係者から拍手が起こった。ホームでは、奥山花代子運転士に同駅近くの青森高の生徒会長、中平一歩さん(2年)が花束を贈呈。中平さんは「青森高への通学や青森駅周辺を利用するのにとても便利になった」と話した。同駅は高架式の2面2線ホームの無人駅で、上下線ホームにエレベーター、1階に待合室や券売機を備える。
JR東日本のダイヤ改正で廃止される寝台特急「あけぼの」(上野-青森)の最終列車が14日夕、青森駅を出発した。1970年に運行を始め、昭和を支えたブルートレインの最後の姿を見ようと、多くのファンが駆け付け、別れを惜しんだ。駅構内はカメラを構えた鉄道ファンらで混雑した。見送りのねぶた囃子(はやし)が披露される中、定刻から4分遅れの午後6時27分、伊勢崎誠駅長が右手を上げると列車は汽笛を鳴らして上野駅へ出発。「おつかれさまでした」と記された横断幕を駅員が持って見送り、ファンらの「おつかれさま」の声がホームにこだました。最後の乗車となる茨城県牛久市の会社員、平根美紀さん(24)は「幼稚園のころに家族と北海道まで行った思い出の列車。時間の流れがゆったりなのが好きで、私より長く生きた列車がなくなるのは本当にさみしい。きょうはなるべく起きていて、最後を楽しみたい」としんみりしていた。あけぼのは、飛行機との競争や車両老朽化、2016年春の北海道新幹線開業などで昨年12月に廃止が発表された。その後、運行日1カ月前に始まるチケット予約には申し込みが殺到。販売開始とほぼ同時に完売となり、ネットオークションでは数万円以上の値が付く状態となっていた。
