重要無形民俗文化財に指定された青森伝統の夏祭り
日本の本州最北端に位置する青森県。毎年３００万人以上の観光客を集める日本最大級の夏祭りが、例年8月2～7日に青森市で開催される「青森ねぶた祭」だ。祭りの起源は定かではないが、8世紀に中国から伝わった「七夕祭」と、夏の厳しい農作業による眠気を払う土着の行事に由来すると言われている。眠気を払う「ねぶりながし」が訛（なま）って「ねぶた」になったという説もある。
迫力ある「ねぶた」は、ねぶた師が1年かがりで作る力作
祭りの主役である「ねぶた」とは、竹や木材、針金で作った骨組みに紙を貼り、彩色を施した巨大な人形のこと。青森ねぶた祭では、中に明かりをともした人形灯篭（とうろう）が夜の街を練り歩くという幻想的な光景が楽しめる。ねぶたは、中国の伝説や歌舞伎、歴史上の人物などを題材としており、極彩色で描かれた勇壮な姿をしている。ねぶた師と呼ばれる専門の職人が1年間かけて制作を行い、題材の決定から下絵、骨組み、紙貼り、彩色などの工程を経て完成させる。最大で、幅9メートル、高さ5メートル、奥行き7メートルにもなるねぶたは迫力満点だ。
衣装を付けて一緒に跳ねれば、誰もが祭りの主役
祭りを盛り上げるのが、「ラッセラー」の掛け声とともに、派手な衣装で跳ねまわる「ハネト」の存在だ。1台のねぶたには、500人から多い時は2000人ものハネトが付いて乱舞する。花笠（がさ）・浴衣・草履などの伝統衣装は一式レンタルすることができ、着付けもしてもらえる。決められた衣装を身に着けさえすれば、（観光客でも衣装さえ着ていれば）ハネトの大群衆と一緒に飛び跳ねて、熱狂的な祭りの楽しさを体感できる。
闇夜に輝く巨大な人形灯籠と、軽快で豪快なお囃子（はやし）に合わせて飛び跳ねるハネトの大群舞が青森ねぶた祭の最大の見どころ。ねぶたは、8月2～6日までは夜間に運行されるが、最終日の8月7日だけは、昼の市街地での運行に加え、夜に海上運行と花火大会が開催される。陸奥湾を船上から照らす勇壮なねぶたと夜空に輝く花火のコラボレーションが素晴らしい。
