弘前公園（弘前市下白銀町）が4月23日、「弘前さくらまつり」開催期間に合わせ、弘前城天守に面した内堀埋め立て地を無料で一般開放する。
約10メートルの石垣下から弘前城天守閣（高さ約14メートル）の迫力ある景観が楽しめる石垣修理に伴う内堀埋め立ては昨年12月から始まり、今年3月20日に完工。約200メートル四方の範囲に砂利などを敷設し、手すりも備えた。同公園緑地課の古川勝さんは「当初は工事用の足場としての埋め立てだったが、国の重要文化財である弘前城にもっと親しんでもらおうと一般開放を企画した。普段は見ることのできない角度から弘前城や石垣、日本一の桜を見てほしい」と呼び掛ける。同工事は弘前城天守がある東面の石垣に「はらみ」が発生し、崩落の危険性が指摘されていた。同市では2008年に「弘前城跡本丸石垣修理委員会」を組織し、東面約100メートルと南面の約10メートルの修理を計画。同修理では、総重量約400トン3層からなる天守を今年8月に70メートル北西へ曳家（ひきや）することも決まっている。古川さんによると、同課には現在、「開催期間は」「無料なのか」といった問い合わせが県内外から多く寄せられているといい、「今年限りの取り組みということもあって、期待が高まっているようだ」と話す。
内堀開放時間は7時～21時。5月6日まで。
