本日8月2日より始まる「青森ねぶた祭」。1日の前夜祭セレモニーに「スター・ウォーズねぶた」が登場し、会場に集まった約3万人が熱狂した。
今年12月18日にシリーズ最新作『スター・ウォーズ/フォースの覚醒』が公開となる『スター・ウォーズ』が、日本の重要無形民俗文化財でもある「青森ねぶた祭」にも「ねぶた」となって現れた。会場の青森市の青い海公園特設ステージには、約3万人の観客がつめかけていた。
ねぶたとなった作品の登場人物やキャラクターたちは、意外にも日本の祭りとマッチ。これは作品が黒澤明ほか日本の映画作品や、日本の文化から多大な影響を受けていることからかもしれないが、製作に携わった北村氏は「下絵の段階からねぶたをよく研究しキャラクターを克明に再現するだけでなく、ねぶた独自の技法との表現を理解し尊重してくださったスタッフの皆さんに深く感謝します」と話している。
お披露目されるねぶたを一体ごとに紹介する中で、「シスねぶた」の登場時、どこからか「コホー……」という音が。おなじみのテーマ曲とともに、ダース・ベイダーとストームトルーパーが会場に登場、これには会場も歓声と拍手が起こった。最後に、青森市長の鹿内博氏は「明日から始まる青森ねぶた祭りにこうしてスター・ウォーズが、応援しに元気を与えに励ましに、前夜祭に駆け付けていただき、心から感謝申し上げます。先人たちが残してくれた素晴らしいねぶたを次の世代にもしっかりと受け継ぎ伝えていきたい」と挨拶。改めて4体の「スター・ウォーズねぶた」がパフォーマンスし、観客の興奮も冷めやらぬうちにイベントは幕を閉じた。
