国の重要無形民俗文化財で、約800年の歴史を誇る八戸地方の伝統芸能「八戸えんぶり」は17日、4日間の日程で開幕した。初日は32のえんぶり組が参加、雪化粧した八戸市中心街で迫力の一斉摺（ず）りに臨んだ。烏帽子（えぼし）をかぶった太夫は、勇壮な摺りを披露。豊年満作を祈願し、厳しい寒さが続く北国に春を呼び込んだ。青森地方気象台によると、同日の八戸の最高気温は2・2度と1月下旬並みの冷え込み。しかし、前日まで降り続いた雪は落ち着き、晴れ間が広がった。各組は午前7時に長者山新羅神社で摺りを奉納した後、長者まつりんぐ広場へ移動。同10時に行列をなして中心街へ向け出発した。一斉摺りは同10時40分、のろしの合図でスタート。太鼓や笛、手平鉦（てびらがね）の奏でるお囃子（はやし）が鳴り響くと、太夫は烏帽子を大きく振り、入魂の摺りを見せた。子どもは「えびす舞」や「大黒舞」などの祝福芸を愛嬌（あいきょう）たっぷりに舞い、沿道に詰め掛けた観客を沸かせた。大雪の影響で、同市の荒谷えんぶり組と階上町の田代えんぶり組が初日の参加を見送った。八戸観光コンベンション協会によると、初日の入り込み数は10万人で、昨年の16万7千人を下回った。八戸えんぶりは20日まで。2日目の18日はえんぶり撮影会（史跡根城の広場）、えんぶり公演（市公会堂）、お庭えんぶり（更上閣）、かがり火えんぶり（市庁前市民広場）などが行われる。
