青森ねぶた祭（8月2～7日）で、青森市の林広海さん（49）が大型ねぶた師としてデビューする。小学生の時から、ねぶた小屋に通い詰めていたという林さん。「大型ねぶたを作りたい」との長年の思いがこの夏、ついに実現する。
高校卒業と同時に第5代名人千葉作龍さん（70）に弟子入りした林さんは、東京の大学を卒業後に青森市内の会社へ就職。兄弟子から「ねぶただけでは経済的に苦しい」と忠告を受けたからだった。システムエンジニアとして働く傍ら青森空港などに飾るミニチュアねぶたを約20年にわたって作り続け、技術を磨いた。ねぶた祭で運行される大型ねぶたは毎年約20台。2011年以降に親がねぶた師の若手が複数登場し、さらにチャンスが遠のいた形となり、林さんは「30年間弟子をやって、1台も作れていない。悔しさとうらやましさが同居した気持ちだった」と当時を振り返る。失意と焦燥の中、2年前に転機が訪れた。「担当団体のねぶた制作をやってみないか」と師匠の千葉さんから誘われた。転勤で仙台にいた林さんは「最後のチャンス」と思い切って退社。50歳を前にした今年、ねぶた師になる夢がようやくかなった。林さんが作るのは「斉天大聖孫悟空」。孫悟空が金角と銀角をひょうたんに閉じ込める西遊記の一場面を描いた。誰も制作したことがない大きなひょうたんを作りたいと、10年前から構想を温めてきた作品だ。ひょうたんは高さ約2．3メートル、幅約0．6メートル。最大限目立つよう、ねぶた上方に配置した。「迫力ある造りに出来ていると思う。親しみ深い西遊記がテーマでもあり、ぜひ多くの人に見てもらいたい」。林さんは祭開幕を心待ちにしている。
