青森ねぶた祭の前夜祭を主催する青森ねぶた運行団体協議会は8日、青森市の「ねぶたの家 ワ・ラッセ」で会見を開き、8月1日の前夜祭の概要を発表した。今年、人気SF映画「スター・ウォーズ」のキャラクターを題材にした中型ねぶた4台が披露されることについて、勝又貞治会長は「ねぶたの新しいジャンルを開き、ねぶたを取り巻く経済が変わる機会になるのでは」と期待感を示した。青い海公園を会場とする前夜祭は、1日午後1時から一部プログラムが始まり開会式は同6時。スター・ウォーズねぶたの披露セレモニーは同7時～7時半、アスパム西側の特設会場で行われる。スター・ウォーズねぶたを制作中の若手ねぶた師4人も発表され、「ドロイドねぶた」が外崎白鴻さん、「ジェダイねぶた」が立田龍宝さん、「シスねぶた」が手塚茂樹さん、今年12月公開の最新作のキャラクターが描かれているという「シークレットねぶた」が北村春一さん。会見で北村さんは「映画が未公開で、資料が非常に限られており、ねぶた風にアレンジするところが難しい」と制作上の苦労を語った上で、「アートとしてのねぶた、ねぶたの技法を全世界に発信できる大きなチャンス」と述べた。このほか前夜祭では、大型ねぶたの屋外展示を継続（雨天中止）。運行団体協議会による初めての取り組みとして、青森工業高校の生徒や北村さんら若手ねぶた師4人の協力でねぶた灯籠110基を制作し、今月13日から8月7日までベイエリアなどに設置する。
